PhotographySUNDAYS WITH SONDHEIM
A set of three Sunday afternoon in-person sessions live at the Juilliard School, the first in a two-part series exploring the life and craft of arguably the most important figure in musical theater to have ever lived, Stephen Sondheim. This series examines Sondheim’s unparalleled skills as both composer and lyricist through a window of song-types. The first set of three sessions will begin in the fall with “Openings”, “Solos”, and “Duets”; then continue in the spring of 2023 with “Trios”, “Quartets” and “Closings”. Each session will take a deep dive into Sondheim’s distinctive artistic voice and intellect, his creative techniques, dramatic devices, multi-layered rhyme schemes, harmonic and melodic innovations, and the adventurous, genre-changing advances he made to the art of musical story-telling. We’ll also look at his life and times, from boyhood days in Bucks County with his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein, to the 1960s scavenger hunts he devised with Anthony Perkins, to the contentious relationship he had with his Turtle Bay neighbor, Katherine Hepburn. Current enrollment is for the first three fall semester sessions; the second set of sessions will open for enrollment in the spring.
