MobileSONGBOOK 6
Spanning the golden age of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood musicals, the Great American Songbook includes some of the most finely crafted songs ever written. This course explores the music and stories behind six of the Songbook’s most iconic classics: “I Got Rhythm” (George & Ira Gershwin, 1930), “My Funny Valentine” (Rodgers & Hart, 1937), “All the Things You Are” (Kern & Hammerstein, 1939), “One for My Baby, and One More for the Road” (Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer, 1943), “Some Enchanted Evening” (Rodgers & Hammerstein, 1949), and “Steam Heat” (Adler & Ross, 1954). Sessions examine the lives of the song’s creators, how and why each song was written, the entertainment business at the time of the song’s creation, and the melodic, lyric and rhythmic elements which make each sing to such success. Students will additionally compare a range of song performances, from vintage recordings to contemporary pop, rock and jazz interpretations, to understand more fully what makes these lyric masterpieces so magical and why they continue to resonate with audiences today.
