EDWARD BARNES                   Producer-Composer-Public Speaker





EDWARD BARNES is an award-winning composer and producer, with more than 30 theatrical productions to his credit.  The recipient of a Guggeheim Fellowship and winner of the Stephen Sondheim Award for “the creation of innovative musical theater,” Edward is a graduate of the Juilliard School, with additional studies at the Dartington Hall School in Great Britain and the Commercial Theater Institute in New York.  His original operas and musicals have been presented nationally and internationally by the L.A. Opera, Mark Taper Forum, American Repertory Theater, Houston Grand Opera Opera Company of the Philippines, Scottish National Opera, Seattle Opera, Minnesota Opera, George Street Playhouse, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Prince Theater, Children’s Theater Company of Minneapolis, and many more. Edward has been a resident artist at the Ucross Foundation (Wyoming), Fundación Valparaíso (Spain), and the Instituto Sacatar (Brazil), and was the founding director of The Metro Ensemble, an opera-fusion performing troupe based in Los Angeles. 


As a theatrical and concert producer, Edward’s credits include Tracy Letts’ play, Superior Donuts, on Broadway, You Are Here for NyLon Fusion Collective off-Broadway, shows for WNYC, SiriusXM Radio and Night Kitchen Radio Theater, Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Grapes ofWrath at Carnegie Hall (starring Jane Fonda, Nathan Gunn and Victoria Clark), Gordon’s A Coffin In Egypt (starring Frederica von Stade) for Lincoln Center’s American Songbook, and recordings of Kurt Weill’s Knickerbocker Holiday (Ghostlight/Sh-k-boom Records) and The Road of Promise (Naxos Records). He has served as Managing Director of American Lyric Theater, Producing Director of MasterVoices, and Executive Director of Gotham Chamber Opera.


Edward is currently the COO of African Parks Foundation, a global non-profit which protects and manages national parks in sub- Saharan Africa. When not working with African Parks, he leads sold- out seminars on musical theater, rock-n-roll, jazz and other popular music at RoundTable Cultural Seminars in New York, and is a frequent public speaker at private and corporate events.
